Having plenty of space to fall back is always good, and most of the time you don't even need to use half of it. The main thing you should do is to try to clear areas and take control of the level for yourself, leaving no enemies behind, this way you'll predict better where enemies are, and you'll be well prepared to fight the cops. It'll probably take you a few tries to get through desert, but it's not really as hard as it may look. Learn to deal with the hard levels and bosses you'll encounter along the way. Always think of the final build, not the current situation. It's okay to pick recycle gland or bolt marrow if you have no bullet/bolt weapon yet, a good one could show up in the future. General advice would be learn how every enemy works, pick your weapons well, and pick mutations that support your survival and your weapon picks.
